Chris Armstrong is thinking out loud.

Don’t think I can remember a job cull of this scale in the tech industry in the 15-odd years I’ve been here… am I forgetting something?

I was at AOL in the 2000s. Layoffs were yearly, then twice yearly, and then quarterly. Layoffs like this just show how poorly managed a company is, and a harbinger of bad times ahead.

Once employees realize they cannot count on a company for reliable employment, it becomes increasingly difficult to hire top talent.

Hard to say, but from my experience, once they go down this road it becomes easier and easier for them and the execs don’t understand where the negative impact is coming from, so they lay-off more people. It becomes a death spiral, as employees who can go elsewhere leave and those left behind suffer low moral and increased workload.

When you are a just another “resource,” execs often believe you can be removed or replaced with no impact on the other resources that work there.

I was laid off in 2001 from an agency that was shutting my whole office down. In the packet was an FAQ about being laid off from the company that had been rephotocopied a lot. I looked at the HR rep processing me and asked, “Does it worry you that this company has a FREQUENTLY Asked Questions for being laid off?” She was puzzled.

The whole company went under within a year.
