Chris Armstrong is thinking out loud.

I wonder whether younger folks are more likely to be into Liquid Glass than those of us who are old enough to remember Vista?

I don’t mean that in a snarky way. I started my career just before the flat design trend emerged, and I’ve always been more excited by that minimalist, more type-led approach to UI design. But fashion is driven by one generation’s cool becoming the next generation’s cliché.

Maybe glossy is the mullet of UI design.

they have better eyes. I just can't deal with light grey text on even lighter transparent backgrounds and other UI follies anymore

I remember the same complaint being made about the thin sans-serif trend that came with flat design 😂

The amount of ‘chrome’ around the new sidebars reminded me more of the brushed metal era; lots of pixels used to show, not useful information, but an effect. But I suspect, like iOS 7 before it, the roughest aspects will eventually get sanded away. I’ll wait to see it all in person before getting too grumpy though.

yeah I do suspect it will get refined, but I’m not clear on what they’re actually trying to achieve with this, besides a “cool” effect?

Skeumorphism was about making things feel tactile and familiar. Flat design was about stripping things back and using traditional graphic design to put the focus on the content rather than the UI.

This… I’m not sure what the underlying goal is beyond “make us look different”?

Change for change sake? The keynote felt entirely joyless, phoned in. Same stilted format, same jokes (Tim doing something vaguely unexpected, something about Craig’s hair, the marketing team getting high deciding a name for macOS, etc. etc.), tweaks around the edges. I honestly came away thinking: Apple is no longer relevant – or fun.

yeah the keynotes are all getting a little too polished and soulless for me, but I guess I’m not the target audience anymore
